I am happy and relieved that everyone hasn't tidied me off their friendslist in my long absence! I hadn't realised it was quite that long since I last posted - not last October.
What have I been up to... still living in Salford. Have been temping locally untill last month when my agency seemed to dry up for the duration. Just got back from a couple of weeks in Swansea including long awaited graduation ceremony. I've decided that Libraries and more specifically archives are the way forward in terms of career so I'm volunteering locally sorting out great boxes of papers which is good and also applying for jobs all over. I've been disgraceful today - still in my dressing gown - was up reading latest Harry Potter till 5.30am. I'm going to have coffee and mini apple lattices now.
Assimilation! I sometimes wonder if I would have been happier with archives rather than libraries, but I didn't really know anything about it when I set out, so to speak...
Glad to know you're still fine and ok!
Oh, I'm living in Swinton now! Well, weekends only until at least Christmas as I'm working in Nottingham...
Hello - sorry to be so long getting back to you! Forgot about LJ again and didn't think to check back...
You are around in Swinton too? I would be intrigued to know what you make of it.
I'm thinking of either libraries or archives at the moment really depending on what kind of job turns up - a library job with special collections could also be quite interesting.
*grin* That's OK! Swinton is funny... mix of very chav and not bad at all... All in all though, I like it, and it's gradually becomming home. :¬) We're up over the Clifton side of the A666... (Love the road when you're telling people how to get to ours!!)
I was divided like that too. Haven't managed to find a job working with Spec Coll though that doesn't seem to involve experience in working with them already! Bah! Be picky about your trainee post I'd say - if you can get somewhere with Spec Coll and get some experience that way, they're more likely to consider you... Oh, and do Manuscript Studies or similar as an option! Am happy cataloguing at the moment myself, but not sure what I'm going to do once this contract finishes... Have to see what comes up over the next few months.
Hello! I am inclined to agree with you about libraries and archives! :)
Hello - sorry - forgot to check back again! Yes I do feel that I will be more on the right track working with lots of interesting books - the difficulty would be not to spend the time reading them.
That is definitly the trouble. I still have a big list of books I found at the V&A that I need to go back and read.
Ah - I see you are now working in a library yourself - how is it?
It's okay. I enjoyed the National Art Library at the V&A because it has lots of interesting old books. The library I'm working in at the moment is on current health management, which is not a subject I find terribly interesting. But we have a small team, and I've been able to learn a lot more new skills than I did at the V&A so that's good. Still looking at getting qualified so I can do "professional" level work.
